Doctors treating patients in the current Nipah outbreak in Kozhikode have observed changes in symptoms and disease progression compared to the initial 2018 outbreak. The severity of symptoms, such as encephalitis, appears to be milder this time, with patients experiencing body pain, high fever, shivering, and cough. The rate of disease progression has also been slower. Experts are awaiting the results of genomic sequencing to determine if there are any genetic variations in the virus causing these differences.
