The Centre recently reiterated its blanket ban on sex workers, transgenders, and gay men from donating blood in India, labelling these communities as high risk for HIV, and Hepatitis B and C infections. This was in response to a Public Interest Litigation titled ‘Thangjam Santa Singh v. Union of India,’ filed in the Supreme Court in 2021 by the transgender rights activist, challenging the constitutional validity of the October 2017 guidelines issued under the aegis of the Central Health Ministry.
